June 2014 "Extreme Road
Trip to Ladakh"
From Manali to Leh through the
challenging Transhimalayan
From Manali we take
the road in direction of Jispa, crossing the amazing region of Keylong....
On the road, we
travel over Rothang pass, 4050m altitude. From there, an authentic view over
Lahaul Valley with it's waterfalls and pine forests is in front of us.
Chai, pics and we start our descent through the thick coat of snow and
ice of Rhotang...
After riding through
the strange, exciting, primitive mountainous and delightful Keylong, we take a
rest at Padma Lodge inJispa which offer an incomparable peace as well as a
fabulous scenery of the valley...
After a good night's sleep, we are ready to ride in
direction of Pang, through one of the most challenging road. Close to Baralachala, we remain stuck 3 hours due to a landslide. Time for a
little nap, some nice pics, we get on our Royal Enfield again and follow our
route crossing all the roads conditions possible, flooded, bumpy, muddy. We
finally reach the camps in Pang at night, exhausted but... happy
From Pang, we
continue our trip toward our main destination : Leh. We cross the wide,
uninhabited and majestic More Plains. We began our assent to Tanglangla, second
highest motorable pass in the world, 5,328 m altitude and start riding down the
mountain on an endless steep of asphalt loops that look like scratched into the
cliff...
We continue our ride
toward Leh and discover on the road incredible natural sculptures looking like
the famous scenery in Arizona. Endless winding roads, a parade of varied and
astonishing landscapes, we're approaching Leh...
The next day, we go
for an extreme rafting on Zanskar river! We flow down 14 km on the strong
current river and reach our arrival destination totally wet and euphoric!
We get on our Royal
and ride in direction of the sumptuous Nubra Valley. On the road we travel over
the famous Khardungla pass, 5600m altitude, the world highest motorable pass.
Riding down the mountains, we start entering in the Nubra Valley which
impressed us by its incredible landscapes...
Snow-capped peaks, rocky mountains full of surprising
contrasts and colors, and at its base sand dunes bordered by a vegetation and
its crystalline river .We are all absorbed by the charm of this
hinterland...
Direction the next
nature's master piece! Pangong Lake, a heaven upon earth... There we have a
convivial bonfire party with other travelers, good music, good pictures, good
atmosphere, we reach our tents and sleep caressed by the soft roars of the
waves of the lake...
Morning time, 7 am,
after a refreshing walk near to the lake and some memorable photo shootings ,
we start our trip back to Leh where our riding days come to the end under a
gloriously threatening sky...
Fascinating
experiences, unforgettable memories... we already think about our next
adventure trip...

The Origin of Sonu Rajput's passion for the motorbikes
Sonu Rajput fell in the world of motorbikes at a
very young age. When he was only 8 years old, he used to play with his younger
brother on a Yamaha RX100 motorbike, taken from his father’s (Mr Raju)
workshop.
On weekends and after school, while the other
children were engaged in age-appropriate activities, like bicycling, Sonu and
his brother rushed to their dad’s workplace to borrow one of the 80 motorbikes
that he owned at that time. What a playground for kids! Sonu and his brother
used to push the motorbike on the top of a hill and hurtled down the slope
alternately without starting the motorbike. For many months, this activity
became their favorite occupation during their spare time.
Sonu’s passion for motorbike has developed with
such intensity that he has never stopped doing anything in relation with
motorbikes as soon as he had the opportunity. When he didn’t amuse himself
hurtling down the slope with the motorbike, Sonu killed time to his dad’s
workshop washing the bikes or changing a wheel. This is the way Sonu started to
understand motorbikes mechanism and develop strong skills in that field.
Still too young to ride, according to his dad, and the
latter too busy to teach his son the basics of riding, Sonu was driven by a
deep desire to finally be able to ride a motorbike. As soon as his dad was away
from his company, Sonu grabbed his fetish motorbike to go for a ride and learn
himself how to control the engine. No one had yet explained him how to use the
clutch and how to control the motorbike in the ascents and descents. After few
falls and scrapes, Sonu finally understood the whole way a motorbike works. If
Sonu came back to workshop with some scratches, he tried to hide them from his
dad and although the latter would realize them, he pretended not to notice
anything and Sonu always escaped scolding. In fact, aware of his son’s
irrepressible desire to learn how to ride motorbikes, Raju had hopes that one
day his son would become as good rider as he is and would take over the
management of his company, and that’s what he did.
At only 13 years of age, as a professional rider,
Sonu did his first motorcycle tour to Leh-Ladakh (His dad was at that time the
only one in Himachal Pradesh to provided motorcycle tours to Ladakh) and cross
the highest motorable passes in the world, making him the youngest boy who ever
ride through this region still on his Yamaha RX100.

One day, while going to his dad’s workshop as usual,
Sonu asked the mechanic a question, while the latter was working on a Royal
Enfield motorbike. He wanted to know what is unique about those motorbikes and
how it feels riding such a machine. The mechanic’s answer was short: “Once you
start to ride a Royal Enfield, you can no longer imagine riding without it”.
The sound, the feeling that it provides and its irresistible vintage side…
Indeed, Sonu has been quickly convinced. It was decided, he needed one at all
costs! After some savings, Sonu acquired
his first Royal Enfield motorbike for INRS 5,000/-. Although the motorbike
needed to be completely refurbished, Sonu worked tirelessly, from the wheels to
the painting, until giving a second life to his Royal Enfield.

A few years later, with a great selection of Royal
Enfield motorbikes and a good mechanical knowledge and strong riding experience
under extreme conditions, Sonu was finally ready to take over the management of
the company, providing lots of innovations and changes both on motorbikes and
itineraries.
Today quality is a result of 30 years experience
and Hardev Motors team works continuously to modernize the company and to provide
the best-in-class services.

1985
The history of Hardev
Motors started in 1985 when K.K. Thakur, named Raju, came to Manali. He was the
first at that time to start a motorbiking business in the whole region.
1991
The first trips to
Leh (Ladakh) were carried out by him. Ladakh region was opened to tourists in
1974 and even after 15 years, it remains a complete tribal area. The famous
Manali-Leh highway was hardly more than a path through the wilderness.
1997
Raju was the first in
Manali who modified a bike. His modification marked an important milestone in
the motorbiking business.
2001
Raju’s eldest son
Sonu adopted his father's passion. Although he is only 13 years old, he did his
first motorbike ride to Leh, making him the youngest boy who ever crossed the
second highest pass in the world.
2003
Sonu started running
his father’s business. Hardev Motors became a true family company.
Since then, many
things have changed. Hardev Motors added several motorbike guided tours to
different regions in India and Nepal, and very soon will also provide
motorbikes tours in Bhutan and Tibet.
